CVS Caremark sued for profiting on confidential information

RBR Staff Writer Published 11 March 2011

CVS Caremark, the US-based prescription drugs retailer, was sued by Richboro, Pennsylvania resident Arthur Steinberg and the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers Health and Welfare Fund on charges that it used confidential prescription information in its custody to benefit phramaceutical manufacturers.

The case is Arthur Steinberg v. CVS Caremark Corp. (CVS), 1103012286, Court of Common Pleas of Philadelphia County.

CVS is accused of violating the rights of patients by sending letters to their physicians to promote certain medicines, the complaint alleged.

Using information gathered at CVS pharmacy stores, the company allegedly identified customers by their name, date of birth and prescriptions.

Complainant Steinberg alleges that the RxReview Program run by CVS Caremark was actually a profit-making endeavor.

CVSCVS Caremark Corporation is an integrated pharmacy services provider in the US that combines a pharmaceutical services company with a pharmacy chain. CVS Caremark operates over 7,000 CVS/pharmacy and Longs Drugs stores.
